Your raise per year, month, paycheck, week and hour

Example: $52,000.00 a year, raised 3%. Yours fills in as you type.

New pay and raise for each pay period
PerNew payRaise
Year$53,560.00+$1,560.00
Month≈ $4,463.33+$130.00
Twice a month≈ $2,231.67+$65.00
Every 2 weeks$2,060.00+$60.00
Week$1,030.00+$30.00
Hour$25.75+$0.75

A year here is 12 months, 24 twice-monthly paychecks, 26 biweekly paychecks (every two weeks), 52 weeks or 2,080 hours at 40 a week; for hourly pay, the hours you enter under the calculator. Each row is a year’s pay at the rate shown above, divided by that number. ≈ marks a figure rounded to the cent, so two rounded figures can differ by a cent from their sum.

How to calculate a pay raise

New pay = Current pay × (1 + raise ÷ 100)

$52,000 a year, 3% raise.

  1. 1 + 3 ÷ 100 = 1.03
  2. 52,000 × 1.03 = $53,560 new pay
  3. Raise: 53,560 − 52,000 = $1,560 a year
  4. Check: 53,560 ÷ 1.03 = $52,000 ✓

A salary raise and an hourly raise are the same sum; only the period changes. This is gross pay, before tax and deductions. Take-home pay depends on your withholding, so this page does not estimate it. A pay cut is the same sum the other way round: the percentage decrease calculator works it out.

Raise by percentage on a $52,000 salary

$52,000 is $25 an hour at 40 hours a week, so every figure here comes out to the cent.

New salary, and the extra pay a year, every two weeks and an hour, for each raise on $52,000
Raise+ A year+ 2 weeks+ An hour
2%$1,040.00$40.00$0.50
3%$1,560.00$60.00$0.75
4%$2,080.00$80.00$1.00
5%$2,600.00$100.00$1.25
7%$3,640.00$140.00$1.75
10%$5,200.00$200.00$2.50
15%$7,800.00$300.00$3.75
20%$10,400.00$400.00$5.00

A rule of thumb on this salary: each 1% is $520 a year, $20 a paycheck every two weeks and 25¢ an hour.

Hourly raise to salary: the 2,080-hour rule

A full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 paid hours, counting paid holidays and vacation. So a raise of $1 an hour is $2,080 a year, and $25 an hour is a $52,000 salary.

On a shorter week, multiply your own weekly hours by 52: at 37.5 hours a week a year is 1,950 hours, so $1 an hour more is $1,950 a year. Part-time works the same way, with your hours: enter them in Hours a week under the calculator and every figure follows. Rates here are to the cent; round a rate quoted to a fraction of a cent, such as $18.125, before you enter it.

Some years have 27 paydays for people paid every two weeks; employers handle that differently, so check your payslip if a year’s total looks off.

Raise percentage from your old and new pay

Divide the raise in dollars by your old pay and multiply by 100: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. From $52,000 to $55,000 is 3,000 ÷ 52,000 × 100 = 5.77%. Work it out with the steps on the percentage increase calculator.

A flat raise, such as “$2,000 more a year”, is the same sum: add it to your pay to get the new pay, then compare the two there. To find your pay before a raise from the new figure, use the value before a percentage increase calculator.

Did your raise beat inflation?

What your pay buys grows by the real raise: (1 + raise) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. A 4% raise in a year of 3% inflation is 1.04 ÷ 1.03 − 1 ≈ 0.97%, a little under the 1% that subtracting suggests.

Use the official inflation figure for the same twelve months as your raise. A raise below it is a cut in what your pay buys, even though the dollar figure went up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 3% raise?

Multiply your pay by 1.03. On $52,000 a year that is $53,560, which is $1,560 more. On $25 an hour it is $25.75, a raise of 75¢ an hour.

How much is a 5% raise on $50,000?

$2,500 a year, taking you to $52,500. That is about $208.33 a month, $96.15 every two weeks or $1.20 an hour at 40 hours a week, before tax.

How much is a raise per paycheck?

Divide the yearly raise by the number of paychecks you get a year: 26 if you are paid biweekly (every two weeks), 24 twice a month, 12 monthly or 52 weekly. A $1,560 raise is $60 a paycheck every two weeks, or $65 twice a month.

How much is a $1 an hour raise per year?

$2,080 a year at 40 hours a week, because 40 × 52 = 2,080 paid hours. At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950 hours, so $1,950.

How do I calculate my raise percentage?

Divide the raise in dollars by your old pay and multiply by 100. The percentage increase calculator does it with the working shown.

Is a 3% raise good?

It depends on inflation over the same year. A raise only increases what your pay buys if it is higher than the inflation rate; a 3% raise in a year of 3% inflation leaves you where you were. Compare it with the official inflation figure for the year of the raise.

Is a raise calculated on gross or net pay?

On gross pay, the figure before tax and deductions. Your take-home pay usually rises by a little less than the raise, because more of the extra is taxed. This page works with gross pay and does not estimate tax.
