SGPA to CGPA Calculator
Your SGPAs, and credits if you have them, with the working shown.
The calculator never sends or saves what you type.
Need it as a percentage? The factor is your university’s rule, so each link names one: Convert this CGPA to a percentage at × 10, the rule many universities use, or at CBSE’s × 9.5. Some universities use no single factor — check yours before a percentage goes on a form. Working from marks? Your marks percentage.

The formula
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits
CGPA = Σ SGPA ÷ number of semesters
Formula (1) weights each semester by its credits; formula (2) is the plain average. They give the same answer only when every semester carries the same credits — then the credits cancel. When they differ, (1) is the one that treats a heavy semester as heavy. To average percentages the same way, by group size, use the average percentage calculator.
An SGPA is itself a credit-weighted average: each course’s grade point times its credits, added up and divided by the semester’s credits. A CGPA is the same average taken over the whole programme, which is why the credits matter again when you combine semesters.
With credits or without?
Take one strong semester of 9.0 over 24 credits and a weaker one of 6.5 over 12. Weighted by credits, the CGPA is (216 + 78) ÷ 36 = 8.17. The simple average is 15.5 ÷ 2 = 7.75: it counts the 12-credit semester as much as the 24-credit one, and here that costs the student nearly half a grade point.
A full eight-semester B.Tech, with credits that vary from semester to semester:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.8 | 20 | 156 |
| 2 | 8.1 | 21 | 170.1 |
| 3 | 8.4 | 23 | 193.2 |
| 4 | 7.6 | 24 | 182.4 |
| 5 | 8.9 | 23 | 204.7 |
| 6 | 9.1 | 22 | 200.2 |
| 7 | 8.7 | 20 | 174 |
| 8 | 9.3 | 18 | 167.4 |
| Total | 171 | 1,448 |
1,448 over 171 credits gives a credit-weighted CGPA of 8.47; the plain average of the eight SGPAs is 8.49. Close, but a different number on a transcript. Results pages often mix the two methods up; this calculator never silently picks one — leave Credits empty and it says it took the simple average, fill them in and it shows the simple average beside the weighted one.
Where to find your semester credits
Your grade card or marksheet prints the credits for each semester, usually as a total beside the SGPA — sometimes labelled credits earned, sometimes credits registered. Use the figure your university’s own CGPA is built from; if the card shows both and the regulations do not say, the examination office can tell you which one counts.
Rounding
The calculator shows the CGPA to 2 decimal places by default, and the Decimals control inside “Show steps” goes from 0 to 6. The arithmetic behind it is exact: it never rounds a semester or a total on the way. It also never shows a 10 that is not a perfect 10 — a CGPA of 9.9999 is printed with the decimals it needs.
We do not know your university’s rule. Some grade cards round the CGPA and some truncate it, and the figure printed on your grade card is the one that governs — use this page to check it, not to replace it.
A percentage is a separate step
Get the CGPA here first, then use the CGPA to percentage calculator at the factor your institution publishes. This page does not turn an SGPA into a percentage, because that rule differs by institution and a tick on the wrong rule would still look correct — some universities do not use a single factor.
University names for the same thing
Some universities call the semester and cumulative figures an SGPI and a CGPI — a grade point index rather than an average. The arithmetic is the same. Students of VTU, KTU, BPUT and many other universities search for this conversion by their university’s name, and it is the same calculation for them too: what differs is whether the regulations weight by credits, and that is the university’s to say.
If you repeated a semester or cleared a backlog, your regulations decide which attempt counts towards the CGPA. Enter the SGPAs that your grade card uses.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert SGPA into CGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add the products, and divide by the total credits: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits. For 9.0 over 24 credits and 6.5 over 12, that is (216 + 78) ÷ 36 = 8.17. If every semester carries the same credits the credits cancel, and the CGPA is the plain average of the SGPAs.
What is the CGPA of 7.5 SGPA?
If it is your only semester so far, 7.5: a CGPA over one semester is that semester’s SGPA. Over several semesters it is the credit-weighted average, so 7.5 and 8.5 at 20 credits each give 8.0. It is still a grade point out of 10, not a percentage.
What is 9.5 SGPA?
A grade-point average of 9.5 out of 10 for one semester, near the top of the scale. It becomes part of your CGPA only when it is averaged with your other semesters; turning a CGPA into a percentage is a separate rule your university sets.
How do I convert my SGPI to CGPA?
The same way. SGPI and CGPI are the names some universities use for the semester and cumulative indices; the averaging is the same arithmetic, weighted by credits where your regulations say so.
Should I use credits to calculate CGPA?
Yes, whenever your semesters carry different credits. A 24-credit semester counts twice as much as a 12-credit one: with 9.0 over 24 and 6.5 over 12 the credit-weighted CGPA is 8.17, while the simple average, 7.75, treats the light semester as equal to the heavy one. The UGC’s guidelines for the choice-based credit system define the CGPA this way, Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ Σ Ci, where Si is a semester’s SGPA and Ci its credits — so if you do not know your university’s rule and your grade card lists credits, the credit-weighted figure is the likelier one. Your regulations govern; the calculator shows both.
Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?
Only when every semester carries the same credits. Otherwise the credit-weighted CGPA and the plain average differ: in the 8-semester example on this page they are 8.47 and 8.49. If your regulations define the CGPA as a plain average, leave Credits empty.
How do I calculate CGPA semester wise?
Keep running totals: add each semester’s SGPA × credits to the grade points and its credits to the total, then divide. After semesters 1–3 of the example (7.8 × 20, 8.1 × 21, 8.4 × 23) that is 519.3 over 64 credits, a CGPA of 8.11; semester 4 (7.6 × 24) makes it 701.7 over 88, 7.97. Enter only the semesters you have.
