Tip Calculator
Enter the bill and a tip percentage to see the tip and the total, with 15%, 18%, 20% and 25% one tap away.
The calculator never sends or saves what you type.

How the tip and the total are worked out
A tip is a percentage of the bill, so multiply the bill by the rate over 100. The total is the bill plus that tip — or, in one step, the bill × (1 + rate ÷ 100).
The bill is $80.00 and you want to tip 18%.
- Tip = 80 × 0.18 = $14.40
- Total = 80 + 14.40 = $94.40
- Check: 94.40 ÷ 1.18 = $80.00 ✓
Only have the card charge and want the bill back out of it? That is the other direction: the reverse tip calculator.
Tip and total by rate
On a fixed $80.00 bill, what each common rate adds and what you pay. Two points on the scale are five dollars apart — which is why "round up to 20%" costs less than it feels.
| Tip rate | Tip on $80.00 | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | $12.00 | $92.00 |
| 18% | $14.40 | $94.40 |
| 20% | $16.00 | $96.00 |
| 22% | $17.60 | $97.60 |
| 25% | $20.00 | $100.00 |
Split the total
Add the tip first, then divide. The $80.00 bill at 18% comes to $94.40; here is what that is per person. For a different bill, read the total off the calculator above and divide by your party size.
| People | Each pays ($94.40 total) |
|---|---|
| 2 | $47.20 |
| 3 | $31.47 |
| 4 | $23.60 |
| 5 | $18.88 |
| 6 | $15.73 |
Uneven orders are fairer split on the bill: each person's share of the food and drink, plus the same percentage on top. Splitting a flat total lets the person who ordered water subsidise the cocktails.
What is normal in the US
Table service: 18–20%. Fifteen is the floor, twenty-plus signals genuinely good service or a small bill where the percentage would otherwise be a couple of dollars.
Bars: $1–2 a drink, or 15–20% of a tab. Cocktails that take time to make sit at the top of that range.
Delivery: 15–20%, minimum $3–5. The driver's time and fuel do not shrink with a small order, which is what the minimum is for. Any "service fee" on the app is usually not the tip.
Counter service and coffee: optional. The tablet's suggested 18/20/25% defaults are set by the vendor, not by convention. A dollar or two, or 10%, is the usual answer; nothing is not rude.
Large parties: check the bill first. An automatic gratuity of 18–20% for groups of six or more is common, and the tip line is often left open underneath it. Tipping on top of an included gratuity is how a table ends up tipping twice.
Subtotal or total?
Tip on the pre-tax subtotal by convention — the tax went to the state, not to the server. On an $80.00 subtotal with 8% sales tax, 20% of the subtotal is $16.00 and 20% of the taxed total is $17.28. Restaurants that print a suggested tip on the receipt almost always compute it on the subtotal, so if you match the receipt you are matching the convention. Whichever you pick, put that number in the bill field above.
A discount goes the other way: tip on the full menu price, before the coupon or happy-hour reduction. The work done was the same.
Frequently asked questions
Do you tip on tax?
Convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, and that is what most receipts print a suggested tip against. Plenty of people tip on the grand total for simplicity; on an $80 bill with 8% tax the difference at 20% is $1.28, so either is fine — just be consistent.
Is 15% still a normal tip?
It is the floor for table service in the US, not the norm. Most guides put standard service at 18–20%, and 15% reads as "adequate, not great". Counter service and coffee are different — see below.
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10, for a $60 total. The quick method: move the decimal point one place left for 10% ($5), then double it. For 15%, take 10% and add half of it again ($5 + $2.50).
How do I calculate an 18% tip in my head?
Take 20% (double the 10% figure) and knock a tenth of that back off. On $80: 10% is $8, 20% is $16, a tenth of $16 is $1.60, so 18% is $14.40. Or work out 15% and add a fifth of it.
How much do you tip for takeout, delivery and counter service?
Takeout: nothing is expected, 10% is generous for a large or complicated order. Delivery: 15–20%, with a $3–5 minimum on small orders because the driver's cost does not shrink with the bill. Counter service and coffee: the tip-screen defaults skew high; $1–2 or 10% is normal.
Do I tip on the price before or after a discount?
Before. A coupon, voucher or happy-hour price reduces what you pay the restaurant, not the work the server did. Tip on the full menu price of what you ordered.
How do I split the bill with the tip?
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. $80 at 18% is $94.40; between four that is $23.60 each. Splitting the bill and then each adding a tip gives the same answer only if everyone tips the same rate — the table below does the arithmetic.
